Innovation Challenge will be live streamed on Thursday

ANGOLA — Members of the public can tune in to pitches ranging from a water line mapping company to a floating cooler for boaters as Trine University’s Innovation Challenge presents a live stream on Thursday. The stream will begin at 9:30 a.m. at vimeo.com/513451184. The event will be held in the T. Furth Center for Performing Arts on the Trine campus, with the top 10 entries in each category business and technology making their pitches to a panel of expert judges. Due to health and safety precautions, in-person attendance will be limited to competitors and judges only. “We modified our format last year to emulate popular pitch competitions and TV shows, so it lends itself very well to a video stream,” said Jason Blume, executive director of Trine innovation 1. “In addition to limiting the spread of COVID-19, the live stream allows us to make the competition available to family members, friends and even potential investors who may not find it convenient

IEDC grant funding partnerships between Trine, area businesses

ANGOLA — Trine University and Trine Innovation 1 will assist two northeast Indiana businesses with product development through a $50,000 grant provided by the Indiana Economic Development Corp. The IEDC’s Innovation Voucher Program, part of legislation signed into law by Gov. Eric Holcomb in 2019, provides grants to eligible small businesses to purchase research services from an Indiana higher education institution or other authorized research provider. The grant will fund work-study opportunities for students conducting research as well as use of specialized equipment on the Trine University campus. “This is a great example of leveraging Trine’s network and resources to impact our regional economy by advancing technology, while also incorporating real-world experiences into our undergraduate engineering programs,” said Jason Blume, executive director of Trine innovation 1.

Deadline extended for 2021 Innovation Challenge

ANGOLA — Money and time always seem to be in short supply for entrepreneurs and inventors. Trine University’s annual Innovation Challenge has provided cash prizes each year to area innovators for their best business and technology ideas. And this year, they have more time to work with. Trine innovation 1 has extended the deadline for campus and community members to submit projects to April 2, with the event planned for April 15. “We recognize that many people are still facing disruptions to their work and lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which can make them feel like they don’t have the time to put together the presentation they would like,” said Jason Blume, executive director of Trine innovation 1. “We hope that the extra time will give potential innovators the time they need to refine their products and business ideas.”
