SOUTH BEND — Firefighters spent five to six hours battling a blaze at Peaches Show Bar in the 1800 block of South Michigan Street that started late Friday morning on an icy, rainy New Years Day. Huge plumes of smoke spilled out of the structure and drifted west. No one seemed to be injured. Firefighters attacked the blaze in the structure while also attending to two-story buildings on either side. Peaches is one building away from the Torch Lounge. Eventually, firefighters on ladder trucks were directing streams of water from overhead. There were stubborn hot spots between the roof and the ceiling, as firefighters continued to spray it from outside, said Gerard Ellis, the fire department’s assistant chief of prevention. Early on, they’d given up trying to access the inside of the structure. Utility lines had also made it hard for crews to gain access to the top of the building, he said. A drone was used to survey damage from overhead.
