The moon is covered by impact craters large and small, evidence of a violent history of bombardment by celestial bodies like comets and asteroids. But these craters only record some of lunar history.

MIT researchers find that, early in its history, the moon was highly porous, which was likely a result of early, massive impacts that shattered much of the crust. They reached their conclusions with simulations and data from NASA’s GRAIL mission.

Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have been studying the moons porosity to learn more about its impact history.
