An unconventional National Hispanic Heritage Month panel held Oct. 12 at Duke unpacked and thoroughly discussed many complexities found within the Latinx identity, particularly for those living in the U.S. South. Javier Wallace was born and raised in the shadow of the University of Texas. His grandfather Leonard Hill worked as a custodian at the institution starting in the late 1940s, when the university was not admitting Black students. Hill’s sisters worked there too, performing cooking and custodial duties on campus.
