Eric talked about students switching majors and taking a long time as the cause of increasing student that when we visited and eight as pt of our heres a bit of what he had to say. But if you dig a little bit deeper, you see that there are really two problems that i think have an enormous impact. One of those is that we have too many students going into years five and six. And going years five and six borrowing money to do it. So they are not completing as fast as they can. A large number of them are students that are not as well off financially and what they end up doing is creating a cycle of working too many hours taking fewer classes perhaps not doing quite as well as their talent would allow because they are working. And then they go forward and take more time to graduate. Some of them give up. This is the group of people for which i believe we have too many people that dont complete. And then in years five and six they are borrowing more money because that is what it takes to get

Chautauqua. A movement grew out of that place and that time and really spread across the country coming to boulder in 1898. Interestingly, the texas board of Higher Education came to colorado looking for a place to establish a Summer Mountain retreat for teacher training and they embraced the chautauqua movement, which was really sweeping the country at the time. They found a very willing participant in the city of boulder and boulder residents who already had espoused the university of colorado here and loved the idea of bringing more intellectual stimulation and entertainment to the community. So interesting Public Private partnership of the city, this group from texas and a railroad that would transport at the time texans between texas and boulder, colorado. It also was very much from the very beginning intended to serve the local community. That was part of the quid pro quo quo. For me as you suggested, this lecture concludes an amazing year that began just a year ago when the library the fred w. Smith library for the study of George Washington opened and i was able to take a seat as one of the inaugural fellows. During that year, i learned what a treasure always of you have in mount vernon led by kurt brands and with library led by Doug Bradburn the staff here is simply extraordinary. They are extraordinaryily loyal. For 150 years, the mount vernon ladys association has kept this place special. With the new library the orientation and education center, no crop of those women have done a better job than the current one, at least since martha did it alone.
