'You will see a sun you've never seen before,' says science writer David Baron. He urges people to head to the 'path of totality' to see the total solar eclipse on April 8 for an experience of a lifetime.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible in the Philadelphia region on Monday, April 8 from about 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The eclipse will reach 90% totality in Philly at 3:23 p.m. To safely view it, people need to use special eclipse glasses or make a device that shows its reflection. Eclipse glasses used in 2017 will still work. New pairs can be purchased online or picked up at participating libraries.

Much of the United States will experience a total solar eclipse, when for just a few minutes the moon completely blocks the sun, on April 8.

In April 2024, many people who live in eastern Missouri and southern Illinois will find themselves in that rare path of totality.

In less than a year, St. Louis will be within a two-hour drive of the path of totality.
