At the conclusion of the marathon known as “Saturday at Nationals” (three games!), some section leaders stand alone, others are perfect along with one other, and three sections have between four and six players knotted at the top of the standings. The 2023 National High School (K-12) Championship (NHS) took place from March 31-April 2 at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. A record-setting 1,745 players from 38 states attended topping the previous record of 1,713 players set at our 2019 event; the number could have been higher but the number had to be capped due to space concerns. The first NHS was held in 1969.

As chess champion Magnus Carlsen accuses an American grandmaster, coaches are trying to develop a virtuous love of the game in young players.

Several participants will be going on to a national event this summer in Rancho Mirage, California. This was Jackson Hole Classical Academy's first scholastic chess tournament and the first in Wyoming in five years. They're also holding a chess camp next month for all interested K-12 students.
