Recent Berthoud graduate Jaycee Williams ended her junior year with a gold medal that had eluded her for two seasons in the Class 3A 800-meter run at the state track meet.

With one event remaining in the 3A girls section of the CHSAA State Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Jeffco Stadium, Berthoud was eight points behind The Classical Academy for the team title. That was after the Titans extended their lead in the 4x100 relay. Prior to that race, only one point separated the teams.

Resurrection Christian junior Jackson Fagerlin has made himself comfortable at the top of the Jeffco Stadium awards podium over the past couple of years.

The 2024 CHSAA State Track and Field Championships will get running early Thursday morning with plenty of storylines involving local teams and athletes.

Even before the season began, Berthoud head track coach Blaine Voth knew his girls team had a chance to be a state title contender.

From individual state champions in the winter and spring to team state titles in the fall, there was a lot of hardware won by local athletes in 2023.

Local Class 3A cross country teams had a strong showing at state meet Saturday at the Norris Penrose Events Center. Led by the Berthoud boys' second-place finish, local 3A teams also had three runners finish in the top 10 of either the boys' or girls' races.

Mountain View cross country coach Whitney Hornung wasn't sure what to expect from her girls team when the season began back in August.

With regional meets a week and half away, several local cross country teams and runners came home with some hardware over the weekend at their respective league meets.

The bigger picture is coming into focus for Berthoud as several of its top runners are nearing the finish line of their high school cross country careers.
