Conspiracy theories abound, from Jewish space lasers setting California on fire to satanic pizza parlors where children are available as toppings. There has never been a better time to sell tinfoil hats, but it’s also terrifying, as we saw during the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Here are five films that help make sense of ...

April 7 at 7:21 p.m. Gov. Greg Abbott announced Wednesday that the state had received two anonymous tips earlier that day about alleged “abuse and neglect” at a San Antonio facility housing unaccompanied minors who crossed the U.S. border seeking asylum. Even though Abbott admitted the Texas Rangers and the Texas Department of Public Safety... Friday, October 2, 2020 at 4 a.m. The University of Houston and Rice University, which both enroll th...

The anti-vaccination crowd has found a new way to maybe get people killed. Goodbye, hydroxychloroquine. Hello ivermectin, a horse dewormer. The drug began circulating in goonybird rhetoric last December as a possible treatment for prophylaxis in COVID-19 patients. It’s since entered conspiracy theory circles as the simple cure They don’t want you to know about because vaccination is all a scam to put autistic microchips into us or something. Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) – the man w...

Sony has announced that they will be closing down their PS3 online store on August 27. As someone that still plays their PS3 regularly, this is a sore blow, especially because there are still a lot of games on the system that have not been added to the PS4 and PS5 stores. Unlike Nintendo with the Wii, Sony will still allow you to download purchases made prior to the shutdown, which means that you have a few months to round out your collection before some titles disappear from sale for the fores...

Since March 19, Diana Sims has been sitting outside of Senator Ted Cruz’s house with signs that read “Ted Talk to Me About Women in the Military” and “Why Do You Support Tucker Carlson Over Military Women?” The reason is both heartbreaking and because it involves Ted Cruz, deeply stupid. Here’s the background, and apologies because it is going to take a bit to explain. Earlier in March, Fox News pundit Tucker Carlson ran a piece on his show in which he ridiculed the United States m...

It looks like the expected closure of the Landmark River Oaks Theatre might be averted after all. It was announced earlier this week that Weingarten Realty had declined to respond to repeated attempts from Landmark to renew their lease or come to terms with outstanding rent after a year of coronavirus-induced poor business. The staff at the theater prepared to shut down the historic theater, which first opened in 1939, at the end of the month and has been run by Landmark for 30 years. Then sudd...

Like a lot of people, I put on some weight over the last year because I couldn’t go outside and white cheddar popcorn is cheaper than therapy. Even as gyms open up, they were never places I really ever felt at home. Soccer moms, wannabe MMA bros, and outright conspiracy nuts dominate every gym I’ve ever been to. What’s an aging goth who just wants to fit into his leather pants and a vintage Alien Sex Fiend T-shirt again to do? One answer is to look up Goth Yoga here in Houston. The comp...

Free speech on the political right is a grift, and here’s how it works. First, you take something like the Dr. Seuss estate deciding to remove six books with racist depictions of people of color from future publication. Then, you ignore the content of what led to the decision in the first place, leaning heavily only on the name of the beloved children’s author and imply that more wholesome content (Tucker Carlson chose The Sneetches) is under general attack. Having buried the original poin...

Earlier this week, Governor Greg Abbott announced that he was lifting state mandates on mask wearing as well as capacity limits on gatherings. The move brought criticism from public health officials as well as the Biden administration, which called it “Neanderthal thinking.” Currently, Harris County remains under red alert due to the high number of COVID-19 cases, including all four of the known mutations. Performance venues also reacted with horror at Abbott’s re-opening, and it looks li...
