VCC To Deliver State Of The County Address

Apr 26, 2021 11:05 AM Daytona Beach, FL – The Volusia County Council’s (VCC) State of the County address is scheduled for tomorrow, April 27, at noon at the Ocean Center. The county’s home-rule charter requires the county chair to report each year to the public on the county’s activities, goals, and objectives. In addition to a report from Chair Jeff Brower, the event will also include pre-recorded messages from the other six council members. The event is open to the public but seating for the luncheon has reached maximum capacity. The event will be streamed live on the County of Volusia Facebook page.

Volusia County Council discussion gets testy about beach issues

Brower, who favors expanded beach driving, again pitched his ideas for free or reduced driving tolls, arguing that this would be a way to keep young people from leaving the area. A connection that seemed, well, kind of strained. Young people leave this area because of a lack of economic opportunity in a low-paying, service-job-dependent, tourism-based economy. If anyone under 50 has ever said, I m leaving this berg because you can t drive all over the beach the way you could in the 70s, I haven t met that person. Beach tolls are there to defray some of the cost of beach maintenance. Bonus: Most of that money comes from visitors. They were never meant to make the beach pay for itself. They are a reasonable user fee that helps with the cost of hosting so many visitors.

County Chair Jeff Brower—who tried to get staff to move forward with naming rights during their last meeting—began the discussion of adding beach tolls to an October workshop with a presentation about Volusia s workforce and how to create a vibrant community. We need our young people to stay here and work and that s not happening, said Brower.  Documents provided by Brower to the council as part of his presentation argued that Volusia s median age is 46.5 while the state s and country s median ages are 41.9 and 37.9 respectively. The document went on to state, in a nutshell, that Volusia also has a higher poverty level than the state and the nation, which have a larger prime-age workforce—meaning adults
