Volusia County Council considers allowing dogs at A1A beaches

Volusia County councilmembers will consider Tuesday whether a 34-year ban on dogs on the vast majority of beaches might be worth revisiting. Dogs have been prohibited on Volusia beaches since 1987, when the county s 47-mile shoreline was consolidated under county control. Allowing animals on the beach would require amending the county s beach code. There are two dog-friendly exceptions: New Smyrna Beach s Smyrna Dunes Park (one of Florida s highest-rated on BringFido.com, fetching four of five dog bones) and Ponce Inlet s Lighthouse Point Park (three bones). Neither allows dogs on the oceanside beaches, restricting the animals to Ponce Inlet and the Halifax River instead.

Volusia County Council to vote on Ormond Loop land preservation

After months of lobbying to protect a 36-acre swath of land along the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail, activists could see the project funded Tuesday if the Volusia County Council votes in their favor Tuesday. The council is set to vote on whether to spend nearly $1 million to buy the land from a developer, and given the ECHO Advisory Committee s unanimous April 1 vote to recommend the majority of money be drawn from the ECHO fund, supporters of the project are hopeful. I’m optimistic, but I’m still asking people to send emails and come support it, County Chair Jeff Brower said Friday. I take nothing for granted.

Wheeler Not Seeking Reelection, Tramont Announces Run For County Council

Apr 16, 2021 6:04 PM Port Orange, FL - After the news broke that a Volusia County council member will not seek reelection, one Port Orange city commissioner announced that he s looking to run for her spot. Chase Tramont, who currently represents District 2 of Port Orange, announced on the Marc Bernier Show Friday afternoon (April 16th) that he is looking to run for the District 2 Volusia County councilmember spot. This comes after the current District 2 councilmember, Billie Wheeler, announced that she will not seek reelection come 2022. Marc Bernier Show · 041621 Tramont A We were certainly looking at this possibility in 2024 when she was going to be termed out, said Tramont. When she brought this up in conversation it certainly got our wheels spinning a bit. Wheeler has been the District 2 representative for Volusia County since 2017. Before that, Wheeler served on the Daytona Beach Shores City Council. In 2020, Wheeler beat out Danny Fuqua during the gene

Volusia County beach approach sponsorship idea stalls

Most County Council members on Tuesday were cool to County Chair Jeff Brower s proposal to sell naming rights to beach approaches. The idea was that the money raised could offset the funds lost by eliminating beach driving tolls to locals. Meet me at the Bud Lite Beach Approach! Somehow, the council majority just wasn t in the mood to blow up the current beach budget. The notion of funding beach activities through corporate sponsorships is hardly new. Treating lifeguard towers like bus-bench advertising, for instance, has been floating around since the 1990s. Back in 1992, then-Beach Director Joe Waller pitched a wide range of corporate sponsorship possibilities for the beach. For example, Hawaiian Tropic might pay the county to put its logos on lifeguard towers, The News-Journal reported in November 1993. Enlisting beach-toll collectors to hand out product samples was also floated.
