Feb. 1 marks the first day of Black History Month, and in the District, the mayor kicked things off with a celebration downtown. 

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser celebrates Black History Month with a kickoff event, highlighting the District's cultural economy and efforts to boost Black Washingtonians' quality of life.

The event is at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Carlyle Room, a Black-owned venue that hosts jazz, soul, and R&B performances year-round in the heart of Downtown D.C.
