Sweden Created a "100,000-Year" Solution to Bury Nuclear Waste - Industry Tap

Vattenfall plans to build new hydro power in four Swedish locations that are already home to hydro power plants.

Swedish energy giant Vattenfall wants to expand its existing hydropower in Sweden, Vattenfall stated in a press release on Tuesday, an initiative positively received by the Swedish government.

Sweden's Land and Environment Court has granted radioactive waste management company Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB an environmental permit to increase the amount of used nuclear fuel in the Clab interim storage facility at Oskarshamn from 8000 tonnes to 11,000 tonnes.

Sweden’s government in late January gave radioactive waste management company Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB (SKB) the green light to proceed with a deep geological repository (DGR) for spent nuclear fuel (SNF) at a site near Vattenfall’s 3.2-GW Forsmark nuclear power plant. The milestone, which wraps up a planning process that has taken more than 40 years, makes Sweden only the second country, after Finland, to take active steps on building a permanent SNF repository.

Sweden has just approved a plan to develop a storage facility that will save the country’s highly radioactive nuclear waste for the next 100,000 years.

The Swedish government approved on Thursday the construction of the final repository for used nuclear fuel in Sweden, for the safe and long-term storage of the countrys nuclear waste.

The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has said the studies included in the consultation on Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB's application to build a final repository for used nuclear fuel at Forsmark present no reasons for it to change its previous assessments of the project. The regulator was responding to the government's referral regarding the application.
