have some heavy snow possible even up to the north. don't shoot the messenger. up to 6 in. even more to the south. the northern suburbs will get just about 1 in. which is a good news. but we will see happening this morning in traffic. everything is nice and light. a bit of overnight roadwork heading out bound on congress toward the circle, three lanes are blocked for some road work. that's all scheduled to be wrapped up at 5:00 a.m.. >> we are following breaking news on chicago's far south side - where a retired police officer being shot during a home invasion. nancy loo is *live at the scene with details. >> investigators remained at the crime scene processing of the evidence and we have confirmed the man shot is a retired chicago police sgt who lives here with his wife. according to our sources, two men broke into the home at 115 and avenue chief through an unlocked door just before midnight. they demanded that the 73 year-old homeowner show them the location of a safe by telling them where it was that he was shot anyway. hughes rushed to christ hospital in critical condition with a gunshot to the neck. the victim's wife was also home at the time but she was not hurt. not known yet if anything was taken from the home. police are not providing descriptions of the suspect but we do know that no one is in custody. this incident was one of the least eight shootings over the past 24 hours throughout the city. quite a rash on a mild day weather wise. that includes the fatal shooting of a 23 year-old man at south shore. back to you. >> some of the shots in gary went through a vehicle. two surviving victims remained hospitalized. no names have been released. police have not given in motive for the shooting. no arrests yet. >>the c-t-a's blue line is back to normal after an eight-inch water main break on chicago's near west side caused a stop to be temporarily shut down. blue line trains had to bypass the grand and halsted stop last night because of water in the platform areas. two or three inches of water rushed into the street -- and caused flooding in some area garages. >> we got an e-mail that the garage had flooded and it took a look outside and did not realize there was about 4 ft. of water in our parking spots. >> the city's water department says the water main - in the 400 block of north halsted -- dates back to the 1930's. the c-t-a stop re-opened at ten last night, after being shut down for more than two hours. school officials are taking steps to fire a high school teacher who's charged with sexually assaulting a student. ryan dolan was released from the will county jail last night, after he posted bond. dolan is a teacher and a coach at tinley park high school. he's now charged with criminal sexual assault of a female student. police say they arrested dolan over the weekend for having sex with an underage girl last week. dolan was known as a popular teacher, but he is not being allowed back at the high school. >> we haven't received an official designation but certainly will not have them back on the campus. >> is a great guy. he's a good coach. >>authorities say the alleged sexual act happened off campus. neither dolan nor his attorney is commenting on the charges. he's due back in court later this month. there is still no sign of a malaysian passenger jet that vanished saturday on a flight to china. a new development this morning... it appears, an iranian teenager who boarded the plane with a stolen passport, was just trying to emigrate to germany... he is not a terrorist. andrew spencer reports, the search for the missing plane and passengers grows more desperate by the hour. >> the longer a missing passenger jet state's missing, the more difficult the surge becomes. >> with every day, crucial time passes. >> three days after the airline took off crews from 10 countries on four ships and more than three dozen aircraft have found nothing. chinese officials arrived on monday to press the malaysian government to intensify the search and speed of the investigation. passengers on the flight were from passengers from taiwan or china. news that an american is among missing is a shock to flight may stay in mystery. >>taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. sportscaster sarah kustok told a criminal court, she doesn't believe her father, allan kustok, could have killed her mother anita. the defense is expected to rest its case today in allan kustok's murder trial. prosecutors say kustok shot his wife in her bed, four years ago. the defense says she committed suicide. a man tried to escape a courtroom after being ordered into custody. william poindexter ran from the bridgeview courthouse after he failed a drug test at a probation violation hearing yesterday. two sheriff's deputies were injured while trying to stop him. a person nearby also suffered a minor cut while trying to help the officers. poindexter was later arrested near a field across from the courthouse. police are trying to figure out why a 19 year old man was lying in the road before he was hit by at least two cars in north suburban lincolnwood. aaron thal was found lying face down on touhy near kostner avenue. both drivers told police they did not see him. investigators are trying to determine if thal might have been the victim of an earlier hit-and-run crash. a federal judge denied bond to a couple charged with a cross- country shoplifting scheme. branko and lela bogdanov, and their daughter julia, are the judge agreed to detain thee parents because they're here illegally and are flight risks. the judge is still trying to find a suitable guardian for their daughter. an african-american family in mount prospect has filed a racial harassment lawsuit against a white neighbor. iris howe and her family say the woman started using the "n" word, the day they moved in, four years ago. and she has repeatedly followed howe's children in her car, cursing and shouting racial slurs at them. the suit claims, the neighbor also threatened to run over the family dog... all part of a campaign to drive the family out of the neighborhood. >> these a good and decent people who live and toward what i find to be suffering without retaliating. they never retaliated. the never lashed back. they just want to live in the neighborhood of their choice which is their right to do. >> the lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction barring the neighbor from contact with the howe family... plus damages for emotional distress and loss of civil rights. a brutal winter is winding down. streamings of the testimony due to the graphic details. pistorius says he shot her by accident during what he thought was a home invasion. ukraine's prime minister will see president obama and the united nations security council this week, as his country loses its grip on crimea. crimea's assembly is holding a referendum on splitting from ukraine and becoming part of russia, on sunday. the russian government is taking up similar legislation later this month. ukraine's interim government and western nations say this is illegal. armed men, believed to be local militias and russian troops, seized control of more military bases and a hospital yesterday. nato is responding by deploying surveillance aircraft. boston is laying out some of the extraordinary security steps it plans to take, to ensure the safety of runners and spectators at this year's boston marathon. a million people are expected to watch 36 thousand runners, as 35 hundred police officers and several hundred national guardsmen keep a sharp eye out for anything suspicious. it's all part of an effort to prevent a repeat of last year's marathon bombings, which killed three people and injured 260 others. the boston to indicate, obviously all this public safety we're taking every precaution necessary. >> colorado's legalization of recreational marijuana is producing a windfall of tax revenue. 14 million dollars of pot sales in january, generated three and a half million dollars in taxes. more than half of it was from recreational pot... the rest was from medicinal marijuana. colorado was the first state to legalize pot for recreational use. senate democrats have been up all night on the floor, discussing climate change. while some used examples and research to back up their claims, one senator used some one of them died at the scene. the other two remain hospitalized. the shootings happened on the eleven-hundred block of dekalb street. some of the shots went through at least one vehicle and hit the victims inside. no arrests have been made. a car crashed into a building on the northwest side... and damage is heavy. the car was eastbound on grand avenue, when the driver says he hit a pothole, went out of control, and hit the building just east of laramie. two families live in the building. no one was hurt. police are looking into reports that the driver may have been drag racing. a tinley park high school teacher is out of jail after he was charged with having sex with a student. police say ryan dolan had sex with an underaged female student last week. he's not allowed to return to school, and the district plans to fire him. neither nolan nor his attorney has commented. the c-t-a's blue line is back to normal after an an eight- inch water main break on chicago's near west side caused a stop to be temporarily shut down. two or three inches of water rushed into the street - in the 400 block of north halsted - and caused flooding in some garages. the city's water department says the water main dates back to the 19-30's. the family of a tollway worker killed in a crash back in january is now suing the truck driver charged in his death. vincent petrella was helping a disabled semi-trailer on i-88 near aurora when renato velasquez crashed his truck into several parked vehicles. velasquez was charged for driving beyond the number of consecutive hours that are allowed for a truck driver. a state trooper was also critically injured, but survived the crash. he's also suing velasquez and the trucking company. if a missing malaysian passenger jet crashed into the sea, then the wind and the waves are searchers' worst enemies, as they try to find any sign of wreckage. the jet mysteriously vanished saturday on a flight from kuala lumpur to beijing. there was no distress call... the plane simply disappeared from radar. 40 ships and more than three dozen aircraft are searching for any sign of the plane and the 239 people aboard. >> sometimes we are taking young siberian tiger to a bar in downtown lockport. he has a license to own wild animals at his big run wolf ranch, but he's not supposed to take them out in public. so now he's charged with reckless caused a hockey game to stop. the dallas stars' rich peverley had just left the ice, when he last night's game against the columbus blue jackets. peverly regained consciousness after medics used c-p-r and a defibrillator on him. he's now hospitalized in stable condition, and the game was postponed. peverly had been treated for an irregular heartbeat before the season started. the only person to witness the accident that killed "crocodile hunter" steve irwin is sharing his story. irwin died in 2006 after being stung by a stingray in australia. he was filming a documentary on sharks, but his cameraman justin lyons says they came across a massive stringray while standing in chest-deep water. he says they were filming one final shot -- when the ray started stabbing wildly with its tail ... and hit irwin's chest. he said irwin looked at him and said "i'm dying". lyons performed c-p-r on him for an hour before medics pronounced irwin dead. lyons says he has no idea what happened to the video from that day, and he never wants it to be seen. beyonce, jennifer garner, jane lynch and other celebrities have teamed up for a new campaign to help girls. it's called "ban bossy" and the message is to stop people from using words like "bossy" because they say that keeps girls from becoming leaders. the campaign was started by sheryl sandberg-- the chief operating officer of facebook.
