Critics say the plan to move English language learners into general classrooms will leave them struggling to learn English as well as other subjects.

Speaking at a School Committee meeting Wednesday night, Superintendent Mary Skipper thanked the resigning members for the service to the district but said the district’s plans align with state and federal expectations and district data.

Departing members argued that BPS is missing a unique opportunity to develop a more effective model for inclusive, multilingual learning in its schools. “They have given up trying – that’s what’s disappointing,” said Miren Uriarte.

Eight member of the English Learners Task Force appointed by the Boston School Committee resigned Tuesday morning in protest of parts of the new Inclusive Education Plan moving the majority of English Language Learners to General Education classrooms.
