Boulder and Zayd Atkinson, a black Naropa student who was confronted by a police officer while picking up trash outside his own apartment, have agreed to settle any civil claims involving the incident.

The former Boulder police officer who resigned after pointing a gun at a Black Naropa student has taken a temporary civilian position with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.

Boulder is set to issue a $125,000 settlement payment to Zayd Atkinson, the black Naropa University student who was confronted by a now-former city police officer last year while picking up trash outside his school housing unit.

After a public fight over Boulder's Police Oversight Panel, three former members share their experience of what worked, what didn't and what they hope is next for police accountability in Boulder and beyond.

“For nearly the last two years, the limitations of the current ordinance have constrained the Police Oversight Panel to a key-sized amount of information sharing with the public as seen in the contents of the 2021 annual report,” Wilson wrote in her official resignation letter sent to YS. “On the two-year anniversary of the ordinance’s adoption, that key-sized sliver of information was reduced further to the size of a pin, and I, Martha R. Wilson, resigned in protest.”
