A Florida sheriff's department said that it has solved a 30-year cold case after a suspect confessed to police officers in North Carolina.

The family members of Robert Cates, a man accused of killing his friend in Orlando in 1992, came forward to law enforcement to help solve the Orange County cold case, investigators announced during a news conference held Wednesday – exactly 30 years to the date of the crime. 

Orange County Sheriff John Mina announced the arrest of Ronald Cates, who's accused of killing 53-year-old John Stagner in 1992.

The suspect's family reached out and helped bring him to justice, officials said.

Thirty years after John Stagner was killed, Orange County detectives say his killer confessed and is now facing a first-degree murder charge.
