Claytor was one of at least six family members who worked at the clinic in Roanokes Gainsboro community. He led an effort by the family to win a precedent setting "inverse condemnation" lawsuit against the government related to the controversial policies of urban renewal in the 1960s and 1970s.

In 1949, Helen Jackson Claytor was the first black woman to be elected board president of the Grand Rapids YWCA. Three board members resigned in protest, reflecting the race relations Helen was dedicated to change.
