ORONO - Like many states, Maine struggles with teacher shortages. At the same time, fewer college students nationwide are choosing to major in education. Despite these trends, the University of Maine College of Education and Human Development—the state’s largest educator preparation and training program—has largely maintained its enrollment numbers in recent years. Students at the University of Maine, Husson University, and Eastern Maine Community College are getting teaching experience through the Educator Accelerator program.

The Educator Accelerator program has helped meet immediate staffing needs, and some graduates have gone on to work in school districts.

The Legislature's Education and Cultural Affairs Committee heard testimony on 8 bills Thursday.

The funding is running out for many positions created during the pandemic to help bridge learning gaps and address behavioral issues.
