JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A group of miners from an unregistered, rival union are holding hundreds of their colleagues underground for a second day at a gold mine in South Africa over a union dispute, police and mine officials said Tuesday. Some 15 miners have been injured in scuffles, the head of the mine said.

A group of 41 mineworkers who are alleged to be holding 500 of their colleagues hostage underground on the East Rand are apparently armed and controlling their movements.

It took Gamelihle Jawuza 45 minutes to walk up from underground when he and other miners came to the surface on Wednesday at the Gold One Modder East shaft in Springs.

Rival unions claim the miners were either held hostage or protesting.
