FRA and ISR win European 470 titles; NZL take Open title

By Daniel Smith Camille Lecointre & Aloise Retornaz celebrate winning the 2021 470 Women s European Championship © João Costa Ferreira The Men s, Women s and Mixed fleets each sailed their Medal Race on Friday 7 May, the final day of competition At the beginning of the final day, Kevin Peponnet & Jeremie Mion (FRA) led the way in the Men s fleet, with their compatriots Camille Lecointre & Aloise Retornaz topping the Women s fleet. In the Mixed fleet, Nitai Hasson & Saar Tamir (ISR) took a healthy points lead into the final showdown. An exciting Mixed Medal Race started the day off. Nikolaos Brilakis & Rafailina Klonaridou (GRE) won the Medal Race to secure a seventh-placed finish overall, with Daniel Göttlich & Anna Markfort (GER) finishing second for overall fifth.

Photo: Joao Costa Ferreira Paul Snow-Hansen and Dan Willcox couldn t have asked for a better result heading into the Tokyo Olympics after winning the open men s 470 title at the European championships in Portugal overnight (NZ time). The pair went into the top-10 medal race in second, eight points behind Kevin Peponnet and Jeremie Mion and needing to finish at least four boats ahead of the the French combination. They managed to do that in the double points showdown, with Snow-Hansen and Willcox fourth and the French ninth in the light 5-8

Vilamoura, in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, delivered light southerlies in the afternoon and the 81 teams battling for positions at the 470 2021 European Championship completed two races. Australians re-join the international 470 fleet at last stop before Tokyo

Mat Belcher and Will Ryan at the 2021 470 Europeans © Joao Costa Ferreira With less than three months until the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Australia s two 470 representative teams have been given the opportunity to join the international fleet at the class 2021 European Championship in Vilamoura, Portugal. Eighty-one teams from 25 countries are contesting the last major 470 event before Tokyo 2020 and the first international regatta since August 2019 for Australia s Mat Belcher and Will Ryan in the men s division and Nia Jerwood and Monique de Vries in the women s division. Many of the European and northern hemisphere teams are match fit having contested the class world championship at the same venue back in March. Travel restrictions and safety concerns kept the Australians training hard and working towards their goals on home waters.
