BC Childrens Hospital will soon be able to run more clinical trials for drugs that could potentially save the lives of patients with hard-to-cure medical conditions – patients like Emmett Willms.

In August 2015, Emmett was only a few months old when he was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, a disease that impacts signals between the brain and muscles.

Ongoing research suggests that an accumulation of toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the area of the brain known as the hippocampal dentate gyrus may begin early on in patients with Alzheimer's disease.
