A dozen people were hurt when a speeding vehicle went on a collision course at around 8 00 tonight. Cbs 2s Hazel Sanchez spoke with witnesses. Shes live in jersey city with more. Police are still here cleaning up what witnesses described as a crazy accident scene. A maroon minivan was speeding down ocean avenue behind me when it slammed in to that silver car you see being towed right now. That started a scary chain of events that left a dozen people hurt including a jersey city Police Officer who was struck by that silver car while standing on the sidewalk. And welcome back. We continue now to follow breaking news out of new jersey. A wild Chain Reaction crash that sent one car flying on to a sidewalk and into a Jersey City Police officer. Yeah. News 4 obtained this video from moments after the crash. The officer is one of several people hurt that happened at ocean and myrtle avenue in jersey city. Lets go back to the scene for an update. Reporter police are removing one of the cars involved in the Chain Reaction crash. Several people injured including an officer were told is expected to be okay. Take a look. In the distance you will see theres a road closure. In the back of the hill theres a few big hot spots. No one expects them to be the last. Tonight this hill was crackling on the side of highway 20. Thats where firefighters will spend the night trying to keep it there. Most highways are natural fire breaks but not for the rocky fire. And theres hundreds of hillsides like this. Packed tight with fuel and ready to burn. This is Fire Fighters 13th day at the line. First they were at the wragg fire, then the lowell fire now this one. Theyre all burning with intensity like we havent seen. Its been a long time since the humidity has been low. Its real dangerous. Very dangerous. One officer spotted the shooter and opened fire. Reporter Vincente Montano had been arrested once before. The individual had an arrest in 2004 for assault and resisting arrest. Reporter the 29yearold had a history of significant psychiatric issue. His mother says he was a diagnosed schizophrenic. He showed up here armed with a pellet gun and a hatchet. Me also had on a surgical mask, possibly to protect himself from the pupper spray. He was shot and killed by the s. W. A. T. Team. Authorities later detonated one of the backpacks he was carrying. There were items in there we think were made to resemble a hoax device, however, after detonating it, it turned tout be pardon meful. Reporter this man thanked police for the quick response. It gives me faith in humanity again. Reporter police do not have a motive for the attack. Police looked in his second bag and said nothing harmful was found inside. The controller says that 2245 personal injury claims are filed last year against department of correction a 37 increase. This is a situation thats gone on far too long and we have to be mindful not just that this puts a financial pressure on the city, but it also has a Human Element which is you dont want to put people in harms way. Reporter late today a department of correction spokesman said the agency, quote, has robust Fire Evacuation procedures in place and commissioner ponte is committed to ensuring that staff and inmates alike are not a risk. The department has taken significant steps with fdny to address the concerns. It can take 11 years until 2026 to fix everything. The agency does admit to having over 100 million in the budget for fire safety. It says it has installed you in a large sys
