Urbandale has a new school board member, filling a vacancy.

Daniel Gutmann, a special education teacher at Jackson Elementary School, received nearly 56% of votes.

Gutmann will fill the board vacancy of Judy Downs, who resigned in March.

Board members have been considering applicants to replace Judy Downs, who resigned suddenly March 21. Expected election cost: $20,000 to $25,000.

Downs sent her resignation to the board Monday evening. In a Facebook post Friday, she said shes stepping down to focus on other areas of her life.

An email sent to parents and families on Jan. 26 from Superintendent Rosalie Daca said that there has been a "leadership change."
