Although hog prices have been disappointing, pork prices at the retail level have been very strong.

Pork producers need to be quite defensive in strategy unless their balance sheets can stand more risk.

With corn prices expected to be below $5/bushel for the rest of this year, cost of production should continue to decline.

In the last eight weeks pork cutout value has increased 37.77% and pork bellies have increased an amazing 152.23%. 

Just as farm equipment needs the occasional tune-up, farm management practices can use proactive examination and adjustment to keep an operation on track for the rest of the year.

Current environment is described by some long-time producers as the worst stretch of losses since the debacle in 1998/99.

Suffice it to say that exports have been a drag on wholesale pork demand all year and will remain so – but to a lesser degree.

At the end of July there were 530 million pounds of pork in cold storage, up 20% year-over-year and the fourth consecutive month above 500 million pounds. 

Pork values continue to advance, highest since Oct 2014.
