On Sunday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange alert for Pune along with some other districts with prediction of thunder showers.

After a delayed start, the withdrawal of the monsoon over Maharashtra and Pune has also been delayed.

KS Hosalikar, head of climate research and services, IMD, said they have identified two areas for installation of radars which would suit the various parameters needed to install radars.

If things go by schedule, withdrawal from Maharashtra would have started by October 5- 10. However, Hosalikar said this would be delayed.

A statement issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) read that due to the low-pressure area over south-west Jharkhand and its surrounding regions, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Vidharbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh for the next two days.

Parts of Pune district as well as various other parts of Maharashtra are expected to receive medium to heavy rainfall in the next two-three days.

"While the overall crop condition as on date is normal, immediate rains are required and in case of any delay in rains, the crop health will be adversely affected, causing lower yields, particularly in Marathwada, which has substantial area under soybean,” the report said.

In 2022, Gujarat had recorded 70 per cent of its season’s rainfall till July 31.

Pune has reported 6 per cent excess rain with the district reporting 518.6 mm rain as against the normal 487.4 mm. As of Sunday, only the districts of Jalna, Sangli and Satara reported large deficits, while the state overall has had excess rain.

In 2019, damage caused to the train tracks, tunnels and other railway infrastructure due to landslides was so heavy that it had affected the train operations between the two cities for 14 days.
