A section of Goodwood Prison in Cape Town is being turned into a court to hear the huge Nafiz Modack trial. At least two big gang cases have already been heard at Pollsmoor Prison, but this controversial move could be a first for Goodwood Prison.

It was a weekend of horror for residents of Vrygrond as the area turned into a gang battleground.

The situation is so bad that police have labelled the area a “red zone”, meaning ambulances cannot freely travel without a police escort.

With 40 murders and attempted murders recorded since late October 2021 around Grassy Park, the frequency of violence has picked up.

Alleged underworld figure Nafiz Modack, who is facing a string of charges including the murder of Anti-Gang Unit commander Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear, has now been arrested by the Hawks, along with relatives of his, for apparent false tax returns amounting to millions of rand.

The charges involve an alleged hand grenade murder attempt and conspiring to kill a lawyer. Security is expected to be tight, as an Anti-Gang Unit member has also been drawn into the case. The Blue Downs Regional Court will hear a bail application on Friday involving controversial businessman Nafiz Modack and several other co-accused.
