HughesNet is now offering 100 Mbps speeds to its internet customers following the launch of its latest geostationary satellite.

The company said the technology will provide a homegrown alternative to high-speed internet service offered to rural Canadians through SpaceX’s Starlink low-earth orbit satellites.

Delays due to the pandemic had constrained Hughes' capacity but a school bus-sized communication satellite will add 500 gigabits per second to the network.

Last week, SpaceX and Indonesia launched a satellite from the US to bring high-speed internet to remote areas in Indonesia. The satellite is scheduled to come online by 2024 and offer a connection speed of 150 gigabytes per second.

Elon Musk-led SpaceX is set to launch Hughes' Jupiter 3, which could be the largest private communications satellite, using the Falcon Heavy launch vehicle.

SpaceX shared an image of Falcon Heavy's 27 Merlin engines, capable of producing five million lbs of thrust, ahead of launch.

The Jupiter-3 satellite will be the heaviest commercial geostationary satellite ever launched at 9,200 kilograms (~20,300 pounds).
