Eminent Pakistani-Canadian journalist Tarek Fatah is no more. He died this Monday after a prolonged battle with cancer. In his death, the free world has lost a great voice of, in the words of his daughter Natasha Fatah, “the down-trodden, underdogs and the oppressed.”

Born in Pakistan, Tarek Fatah was accused of sedition by the Zia regime, and fled his home country to eventually settle in Canada.

Born on November 20, 1949, in Karachi, Fatah -- who emigrated to Canada in 1987 -- was an award-winning reporter, columnist, and radio and television commentator

Pakistani-Canadian journalist Tarek Fatah passed away on April 24, as confirmed by his daughter Natasha. Fatah was known as an Islam critic, who called himself a Hindustani.

Candian columnist Tarek Fatah was noted for his severe criticism of Islamic fundamentalism and the Pakistan government's policies. He described himself as an 'Indian born in Pakistan' and 'Punjabi born into Islam'. Tributes poured in after his daughter confirmed his death on Monday.

His daughter Natasha Fatah confirmed the news of his death in a Twitter post.

Fatah was born to parents who migrated from Bombay to Karachi a month after Independence. He called himself an “Indian born in Pakistan, a Punjabi born in Islam; an immigrant in Canada with a Muslim consciousness, grounded in a Marxist youth.”
