Karen Devries has spent her career researching the social epidemiology of sensitive topics, including sexual health and violence against women and children.

Violence in schools—physical, sexual, and psychological—is an insidious problem, all too common in many countries around the world. While we have the data to characterize the overall problem, policy makers often lack the data they’d need to act effectively against violence (e.g., which people are committing it? Is it getting better or worse over time?). We are also missing data on some of the most vulnerable groups, such as children under age 10, or disabled children. Even education system...

​​How is violence studied and prevented?  In this hybrid lecture, we will tell the story of how violence became a public health issue, and explore key current questions about the violence epidemiology, ethics and interventions. Is violence inevitable, and can it be prevented?  In this lecture, we will examine the global scope and magnitude of intimate partner violence against women and child maltreatment; look at some of the health effects of these forms of violence and give an overview of research on strategies for prevention. The panel session will include practitioners and academics and will finish with a Q&A session.
