WordPress and Tumblr owner Automattic has bought Beeper, the maker of the Beeper Mini app that challenged Apple’s iMessage dominion late last year. Although it ultimately lost that battle, the incident gave the DOJ more ammunition in its antitrust suit against the iPhone maker.

Commissioner Brendan Carr called on the Federal Communications Commission or FCC to investigate Apple (AAPL) regarding the shutdown of Beeper Mini, an app which introduced iMessage for Android users.

The commissioner stressed the importance of scrutinizing whether Apple's decision to restrict Beeper Mini functionality violates FCC regulations.

Some Beeper users are claiming issues with using iMessage on their Macs as some of them are being entirely banned from using the messaging app after registering with Beeper.

Beeper is accepting its fate that it can't do anything if Apple decides to go after its iMessage-like app. Since the latter is a big name in the tech industry, there's nothing it can do but refrain from responding if ever Apple takes action.

After Beeper Mini developers issued another workaround to making the app functional, it ran into stability issues.

A group of bipartisan lawmakers asked the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate the actions taken by Apple on third-party applications that enabled Android devices to use iMessage.

Beeper Mini has a new “fix” coming for its broken iMessage on Android integration. However, the new method requires Mac access to send (and intermittently resend) “registration data” from an Apple-made desktop or laptop.
