The Town of Merrillville is one step away from awarding Andrean High School $1 million to help with infrastructure, and a giant gift to the Diocese of Gary's schools isn't changing at least one councilor's mind.

Nearly half of the members of the Merrillville Town Council fell in defeat in May 2 primary, changing its landscape for the November general election.

Democratic voters in Merrillville seem to have opted Tuesday to replace three incumbent town council members with new candidates for the general election.

The Town Council on Tuesday voted 6-0 to adopt a redistricting ordinance that will dramatically improve Merrillville’s population deviation in town wards.

Council President Rick Bella, D-5, sought the help of the nonprofit organization Indiana Local Government Redistricting to adjust the makeup of the wards and even out the population in them.
