I am an 86-year-old Vietnam War veteran. I was 9 years old when Japan surrendered on Sept. 2, 1945, ending World War II. WWII began on Sept. 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. This war was won by defeating the Axis powers of Germany, Italy and Japan by the Allied countries of the United States of America, Great Britain, Poland and France. The Soviet Union joined the allies in June 1941. Journalist Tom Brokaw called the Americans that fought The Greatest Generation.

Presidents from both parties have been trying for years to get a comprehensive immigration policy passed to deal with the huge numbers of tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free. So maybe we should stop playing games with the border, Israel and Ukraine. These are real issues requiring real solutions. After all, which is really more important? Having campaign issues? Or resolving real ones?

The current property tax assessment is flawed, with a close to 40% increase in property values. No one can afford this, whether it be property owners, renters or businesses.

According to Republicans, President Biden is “weaponizing” the Justice Department. You just can’t make these things up. At the same time, Trump is demanding that the congressional GOP “defund” the federal criminal prosecutions against him. Does the man ever listen to what he says?

Last week, Republican candidates gathered in Milwaukee for their first debate. Well, most of them. Donald Trump chose to skip. Probably wanted to avoid questions about his 6-foot, 3-inch, 215 pound stature. Or questions about his latest indictments.

All too often I hear candidates making promises only to win people's votes, even when they know it is wrong for the community. Even worse, candidates make promises on issues that they don’t have the experience or enough knowledge of to realize it will be detrimental to the community. Don Overcash is different. He has the experience to know the difference, and the integrity to do what’s right.
