SEPTA riders can tap their credit or debit cards, or use Google Pay or Apple Pay to ride subways, trolleys and buses beginning Friday, Sept. 29. Riders also can continue using their Key cards to pay for fares. Regional Rail will begin allowing contactless payment next year.

SEPTA plans to replace its Key card platform with a new payment system that allows riders to pay using their smartphones, smartwatches and contactless debit and credit cards. SEPTA Key 2.0 also will feature other upgrades that riders have requested, including the ability to purchase fares for multiple riders in one transaction.

Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority is looking for a new fare system after more than a decade with its current vendor. Officials are looking for an “open architecture” option that can be more easily adapted to future needs.

Plus, contactless credit card and mobile payments are on the horizon.
