Biden wants to fix school funding gaps It won t be easy

Melina Mara / Pool / Getty Images President Joe Biden and his education secretary Miguel Cardona have been clear: they want to close America’s school funding gaps. “Across the nation, schools with the most students of color received, on average, dramatically less funding than majority-white schools,” Cardona tweeted last week. Biden has already proposed increasing federal spending on schools by doubling funding for Title I. Now, the White House is indicating it wants to go further, pushing states to change how they allocate funding to schools and addressing the problem at its root. “Under the President’s proposal the new funds for Title I will provide meaningful incentives for states to examine and address inequalities in their school funding systems,” a White House official, who was not authorized to speak publicly, told Chalkbeat. “We look forward to working with Congress to advance this goal.”

The Hate U Give, Reviewed by Sita, 11

The Hate U Give, Reviewed by Sita, 11 December 21, 2020 The Hate U Give, a powerful young adult novel by Angie Thomas, is an extremely relevant novel distinctly dealing with racism’s impact on society, as well as a moving read. After the death of Oscar Grant in 2009, Angie Thomas decided to write a book for teens about police brutality since she believes the teenage years are “a critical age.” The book, especially its title, which comes from the phrase, “THUG LIFE,” was inspired by the influential African-American rapper Tupac Shakur, born Lesane Parish Crooks. The Hate U Give has the overt message of how racism can cripple communities, and the undisguised theme of social justice, making it both timeless in its relevance and an especially fitting story today, due to the recent Black Lives Matter protests.
