The reigning Class 3 state champion Fatima Lady Comets enter the Final Four, which begins at 11 a.m. today with a matchup against the fifth-ranked Oak Grove Panthers at Killian Softball Complex in Springfield, as the hunted team. The top-ranked Lady Comets have known they are the team to beat all season, but it has shown no sign of slowing them down.

I’m still trying to process what I witnessed in almost three hours of softball Saturday afternoon at Killian Softball Complex in Springfield. I figure I should start with trying to give a title to the Fatima Lady Comets’ improbable, phenomenal, come-from-behind 16-14 victory in eight innings against the Chillicothe Lady Hornets.

It was a game the Helias Lady Crusaders might have wanted to forget. But it was one that may have gotten them to where they are today: the Class 4 softball semifinals. On Oct. 3, Helias jumped out to an early 4-0 lead against Capital City. But the Lady Cavaliers didn’t quit and rallied for a 5-4 victory against the Lady Crusaders. To reach the Final Four for the first time in program history, the Eugene Lady Eagles were going to have to beat the Kelly Lady Hawks, one of the most decorated softball programs in Missouri high school history. Mission accomplished. Eugene scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back Thursday night, as the Lady Eagles defeated Kelly 5-0 in a Class 2 quarterfinal game at Eugene High School.

It was the perfect time for her first home run of the season. Ava Morris hit a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday to break a tie at 2 as the Helias Lady Crusaders defeated the Camdenton Lady Lakers 4-2 in the Class 4 softball quarterfinals.

It’s going to be a busy day on the softball field for the Show-Me Conference. Three teams - the Fatima Lady Comets, the Russellville Lady Indians and the Eugene Lady Eagles - will each play for a spot tonight in the state softball Final Four after winning district titles last week.
