Natural disasters take a toll on mental health, particularly for children. In Flagstaff, kids have had to deal with the upheaval of the pandemic and multiple fires and floods in recent years. But nature can also be the cure. KNAU’s Melissa Sevigny reports, a pilot program in “horticultural therapy” at Killip Elementary is tapping into the surprising power of plants.

A feasibility study done by the City of Flagstaff after flooding tore through neighborhoods in the Museum Fire burn scar is expected to be done early next month.

A grant from the National Science Foundation will support the development of a new computer science curriculum at Killip Elementary School in Flagstaff, designed especially for Native American students. KNAU’s Melissa Sevigny spoke with the project’s lead researcher Morgan Vigil-Hayes about how the curriculum will teach computer science skills by tackling a familiar problem: lack of Internet access.

The City of Flagstaff and Coconino County are making long-term plans for handling stormwater in the neighborhoods below the Museum Fire scar, which were inundated with floods this summer. KNAU's Melissa Sevigny reports, so far there's no funding to implement the planned solutions.
