A few of the most competitive primary races in Hawaii can be found in the Legislature, but the 2024 primary is also distinguished by the fact that dozens of incumbents

While no choice received a majority of votes, those top two captured 42% of the total 844 votes.

There are two who have entered the race so far, incumbent Mayor Mitch Roth and former Bay Clinic Chief Executive Officer Kimo Alameda. Candidate filing for the 2024 election starts Feb. 1.

Dr. Kimo Alameda Announces Mayoral Campaign

The former Bay Clinic CEO and chief of the Hawai‘i Island Fentanyl Task Force made his announcement in front of a standing-room-only crowd at the main pavilion at Wailoa River State Recreation Area on Saturday night in Hilo.

Over 100 community members crowded the sidewalk in front of the King Kamehameha statue in Hilo on Saturday to support Kimo Alameda and his candidacy for Hawaii County mayor.

Mayor Roth made his announcement at Nani Mau Gardens in Hilo in front of at least 165 supporters. Much of the work Roth and his administration has done since taking office on Dec. 7, 2020, has been fueled by this dream of a sustainable island for future generations.

Mitch Roth will seek a second term as mayor.
