A study on seabirds in the Falkland Islands was recently selected as the winner of the Ecological Society of Americas W.S. Cooper Award. The winners of the prestigious award are co-authors Jacquelyn Gill, associate professor in the School of Biology and Ecology and the Climate Change Institute, and Kit Hamley, Ph.D. candidate in the Climate Change Institute.

The warrah -- fox-like dogs also called the Falkland Islands wolves -- may have been brought to the islands by Indigenous South Americans.

(Inside Science) – An unknown population of humans that left few traces on the landscape of the Falkland Islands may have brought large fox-like dogs still present when Europeans first visited the archipelago in the late 17th century.

The team headed by Kit Hamley also extended its research into the warrah (Dusicyon australis), an extinct species of fox. The warrah was the only native and terrestrial mammal to reside on the Falkland Islands at the time of European arrival. Subsequent hunting wiped the species out in 1856, making it the first extinct canid in the historic record, Hamley says.
