The 43-day-old baby died following clashes between jail staff and refugees. The latter have been on a hunger strike for months, demanding to be released after two years in prison. The case emerged after activists posted two videos online. Even though the UN granted Rohingya refugee status, India continues to treat them as illegal migrants.

A Rohingya couple was brought in handcuffs for the last rites of their child who died in a refugee detention centre near Jammu. A video of the handcuffed parents at the burial site has been widely shared on social media.

A video uploaded by the Rohingya Human Rights Initiative (RHRI), an India-based organisation, purportedly shows the Rohingya mother in handcuffs as she mourns beside the baby’s body, surrounded by other grieving women

According to Kathua SSP Shiv Deep Singh, the child’s death had nothing to do with Tuesday’s incident. Habiba had not been keeping well since her birth, the SSP said.
