GEORGE TOWN: The gold and silver chariots for Thaipusam have both departed one after the other for the long procession across the city, a journey that is expected to take an entire day to reach their destinations.

GEORGE TOWN: More than a century ago, when the Thaipusam festival first took root in Penang, wealthy businessman Gurusamy Chettiar decided he would help feed the hundreds who trekked from Little India in George Town to the Waterfall Hill temple to fulfil their vows.

GEORGE TOWN: A large crowd outside the Sree Balathanduyathapani Waterfall Hilltop Temple delayed the return journey of the golden chariot by an hour on Wednesday (Jan 19).

WHILE the silver chariot retained the tradition of depending on two bulls to pull it across the city, the golden chariot was powered by a motorised vehicle this Thaipusam.

GEORGE TOWN: The Silver Chariot has reached the Nattukotai Chettiar Temple at 6am on Wednesday (Jan 27) after it left the Kovil Veedu on Penang Street at 3.30am. According to sources, an 11th hour decision was made possible due to the intervention of Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan.
