The Chairman stated that the government has provided financial support of nearly Rs 3.2 lakh crores to BSNL in tranches to revive the telecom PSU and position it as a competitive player in the industry.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) plans to strengthen regulations and increase penalties to combat pesky communications affecting mobile phone users. Trai will issue a consultation paper to tighten rules and prevent misuse of the system, according to chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti. The government has allocated a new 160 numbering series for service and transactional calls, distinguishing them from promotional calls using the 140 series.

Trai on April 26 announced stringent reporting rules around base stations, asking operators to provide granular details like site location, radiating frequency, backhaul connectivity, technology utilised like 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G and the time of commissioning of a site, as it looks to improve the quality of service (QoS) and address the problem of call drops. The operators were against the regulators move to seek such granular data.

Telecom operators are holding consultations with officials from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) regarding the new rules that have come into effect. Since a large amount of data has to be submitted and the format is also different, the industry needs some time to upgrade their systems.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has mandated telecom operators to provide detailed information about base stations or mobile towers, including site location, frequency, backhaul connectivity, technology used, and commissioning time. This directive aims to enhance the quality of service (QoS) and address call drop issues.

TRAI: Currently, the telcos are not required to provide details around date of commissioning of a base station and if the site is connected by fibre or not and details of 5G base stations and cells.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is working on strengthening the quality of service (QoS) benchmarks and by April-May, directions will be issued to telcos in this regard, said people with knowledge of the matter. In terms of network availability, the regulator is focusing on 4G and 5G technologies as 2G and 3G will become redundant in the future, they said.
