Both Polk County deputies shot in the line of duty in late April are out of the hospital as they continue to recover from their injuries.

One of two deputies with the Polk County Sheriff's Office who was shot in the line of duty last weekend is now recovering at home. The other remains in the hospital, receiving treatment.

The 26-year-old man had been radicalized into the Moorish "sovereign citizen" movement at Fresno State. His mother hadn't seen him for three years.

What is a Moorish sovereign citizen?

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd  provided more details after a man claiming to be a ‘sovereign citizen’ was killed early Saturday morning by deputies who say he opened fire on them, seriously injuring both, as they were investigating a suspicious vehicle at a county park.  

Sheriff Grady Judd says two deputies are in the hospital after an extremist Moorish gunman shot them at a Lakeland park. Deputies shot and killed the gunman.

A man killed Saturday in a shootout with Polk County sheriff's deputies was identified as a member of the sovereign citizen movement by Sheriff Grady Judd.
