Alexandra Enyart has conducted plenty of music, but there’s one opera that holds a special place in her heart: 'As One,' a transgender coming-of-age story.

Rather than a museum piece, Rob Glaubitz considers opera a contemporary art form that can connect deeply with life as we know it. I think opera is still very relevant today and has something to say to modern audiences. That s one of my reasons and my passions for doing modern opera, said Glaubitz, artistic director of Painted Sky Opera. I try to find something that is relevant to today s society in every work that we do.
Directed by Glaubitz with musical direction by Jan McDaniel, As One marks the first collaboration between the two OKC arts organizations as well as the first performance with an in-person audience in the theater at Oklahoma Contemporary s new downtown complex.

LAWRENCE A double-bill performance featuring students from the University of Kansas School of Music voice and orchestra programs will explore themes of identity, trauma and resilience through two contemporary operas. “Snow Angel,” composed by KU graduate Bonnie McLarty with words by Wyatt Townley, explores the reclamation of personal identity and agency following a sexual assault of the female protagonist. The opera was written as McLarty’s dissertation project, and this performance marks its premiere with a chamber ensemble. “As One,” composed by Laura Kaminsky with words by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed and film also by Reed, traces the life experiences of a transgender protagonist named Hannah.
