SIR – The Duke and Duchess of Sussex went to California to avoid the public glare and live a quieter life.

SIR – The Prime Minister’s speech was bereft of ideology, lacking in long-term vision and far removed from the traditional Conservative principles of small government, low taxation and wealth creation.

SIR – I appreciate that not everyone can afford to pay for private dentistry but, contrary to many myths, it isn’t that expensive, and is clearly preferable to DIY dentistry (“Elderly fear having to resort to ‘DIY dentistry’”, report, December 26).

SIR – Andrew Pearse (Letters, December 21) is right – the problems facing the NHS are far too great for one party to address, though I was pleased that Wes Streeting, the shadow health secretary, recognised the need for reform from the Labour benches.

SIR – While the NHS workers who are planning to strike (Leading Article, December 4) may have a justifiable case for a significant pay rise, I suspect it is the daily battle against the shortages, delays and lack of resources on the front line that is the real grievance.

SIR – As a retired chartered engineer who spent his life working in the energy sector, I often look to see where Britain’s electricity is coming from.

SIR – The letter (November 26) from Professor Kamila Hawthorne, chair of the Royal College of GPs, asserting that GPs are “keeping the NHS upright”, only shows how out of touch that college is.

SIR – After being told that my hospital’s audiology department no longer had records of my hearing loss, I was informed that I needed another GP referral (Letters, November 22).

SIR – One reason for the early retirement of front-line medical staff from the NHS (Letters, November 6) is the intransigence of management over the rationalising of the workload for senior staff, especially the emergency out-of-hours workload.
