Small farmers here in the middle of Central America’s dry corridor are almost totally reliant on rainfall to water their crops. As those rains become less reliable because of climate change, crop failures and then migration are the results.

In Honduras, subsistence farmers on the small parcels around the village struggle with erratic growing conditions because of climate change; the people are pressed by poverty and hunger. For many in small towns just like this, there is only one option: immigration.

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — The man convicted last year of coordinating the killing of Honduran environmental activist Berta Cáceres was sentenced Monday to more than 22 years in prison, upsetting the victim's family because the penalty was significantly below the maximum.

It was heartbreaking for me to hear the daughters of slain environmental and Indigenous rights activist Berta Cáceres call her mami at a meeting in Tegucigalpa in January. They told me they are carrying on her fight at the helm of the Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH). The 2016 killing of Cáceres, a Lenca Indigenous leader, is emblematic of the dangers to human rights defenders in Honduras.

Environmental activist Berta Caceres was shot to death in her home in March 2016. Her family expressed dismay over the sentence, saying the "maxmum penalty was not applied."
