While citing EV subsides in other countries like China and Germany Shailesh Chandra, managing director, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, urged the Center to help replicate an enabling environment similar to that in Beijing that has pledged to support adoption of EVs until unit sales touched at least a fifth of all new cars sold.

While subsidy cuts may be a roadblock for the EV growth in the short run, manufacturers should take it as an opportunity to reevaluate their production plans for long-term growth.

Fame Scheme: Subsidies for electric two, three, and four wheelers has been revised to INR 7, 048 crore, of which INR 5,311 crore is for electric two-wheelers. An allocation of INR 4,048 crore has been made for purchasing electric buses and setting up electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

Charging Infrastructure: Lack of charging stations has been a key concern for those wanting to buy electric vehicles, as that made them worried about the battery draining out, stalling the vehicle. While carmakers are awaiting details like the number of charging stations the government is aiming to set up, industry executives said the overall budget intent to encourage adoption of EVs, especially in the public transport segment, will help consumers switch to cleaner forms of mobility.

Tata Motors: “The global case studies indicate that support for about 20% EV adoption is certainly helpful. It would be good if this is the case in India as well,” Balaje Rajan, Chief Strategy Officer, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM), told ETAuto.
