Last season, the Capital City Cavaliers were one team point from claiming the school’s first state trophy. Now, the Cavaliers are ready to try again.

It was a perfect start to the Class 2 girls state wrestling tournament for Capital City’s Jacinda Espinosa. The 140-pounder opened her second state tournament with a matchup against Parkway South’s Taya Stanford, using five takedowns, a three-point near fall, a two-point near fall and three escapes to build an 18-6 major decision and move on to the quarterfinals at Mizzou Arena.

Capital City’s middle weights built a lead the Cavaliers wouldn’t give up. After the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Tigers went up 18-12 after three weights, with one forfeit each way, the Cavaliers strung together four pins and a forfeit win to help build a 54-28 Central Missouri Activities Conference win Tuesday night at Capital City High School.

It was a tough draw for the Capital City Cavaliers, facing the defending Missouri Duals champions in pool play Friday night. “Neosho’s been good for the last few years,” Capital City coach Mitch Werdehausen said following the Cavaliers’ 70-3 dual loss to the Wildcats at Helias Gym. “We had some good matches out there and we wrestled hard all day.” Capital City opened with a 48-24 win against North Point to finish 1-1 in pool play.

Last season, the Capital City Cavaliers took a step forward as a program, sending six wrestlers to the Class 3 state tournament. This season, Capital City coach Mitch Werdehausen said he is more focused on what happens during matches than the end result.
