Whites Ferry, the last working ferry on the Potomac River, shut down three years ago because of a dispute over access to the Virginia landing in Loudoun County near Leesburg.

On the third anniversary of the shutdown of historic White’s Ferry, folks say they feel “beyond frustrated” that the ferry remains closed.

It’s been nearly two and a half years since the last time White’s Ferry took cars across a lazy span of the Potomac River — and residents in Poolesville, Maryland, are still counting the days.

The future of White’s Ferry continues adrift after owner Chuck Kuhn announced Rockland Farm declined the $1.1 million offer to buy the Virginia landing area. 

The current owner of the now-shut-down historic White’s Ferry says he’s “run out of options” to resume ferry service across the Potomac River, and now plans to sell the operation to Montgomery County, Maryland.

White’s Ferry, which carries passengers and cars across the Potomac between Maryland and Virginia, has been shut down for two years now. On Thursday, locals gathered to send a message to politicians that it is hurting the community.
