Tumor gene profiling is a tool that can help patients with a cancer diagnosis make informed decisions about treatment. In predominantly white populations, among men with early stage, favorable-risk prostate cancer, these tools have been shown to increase patient acceptance of active surveillance a common, evidence-based approach to monitor the tumor before a more aggressive treatment, like surgery or radiation.
However, a new study from researchers at the University of Illinois Chicago and Northwestern University shows that in a predominantly Black, urban patient population with substantial social disadvantage, tumor profiling had the opposite effect among men with clinically similar prostate cancers it decreased patient acceptance of active surveillance. In fact, men with low health literacy were more than seven times less likely to accept active surveillance if their tumors were profiled, compared with those with high health literacy.

The appointment follows the resignation of Herefords Australia general manager, Andrew Donoghue.
Sharp has held executive and marketing and communication leadership roles across several public, private, and not-for-profit organisations, including head of marketing for Novartis Consumer Health, and held senior management positions at PZ Cussons, Coca-Cola Amatil and Goodman Fielder. She was at the MLA for five years, until April 2020.
Chair of Herefords Australia, Hon. Trish Worth AM, said it was Sharp’s combination of general management and red meat marketing experience that impressed the board.

Former Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) marketing chief, Lisa Sharp, has taken the CEO reins at Herefords Australia.
Sharp was most recently heading up marketing and insights for the MLA, where she spent five years and was credited as a critical contributor to MLA’s last two, five-year strategic plans. She also brings a wealth of marketing and communications experience across public, private and not-for-profit organisations including Novartis Consumer Health, PZ Cussons and SPC Ardmona.
